Magical Scraps is a cute little boutique in Breckenridge, CO. specializing in handmade and local goods. We have an ongoing relationship working together coming up with cute new designs for the shop to use as well as some brand refreshing.
Being based in a busy resort town with a lot of generic t-shirt shops to choose from they wanted to stand out. We came up with designs that speak to what both tourists would likely want and also a little something for the locals. We put together some designs for the clothing and patches for hats they press in-house as well as sticker designs.
I also helped come up with some ideas to help them with their marketing through social media. Including social media assets and a posting structure that they could follow.
My client Sarah had established herself already as the local nail guru when we connected and started discussing her brand identity. The thoughts at the beginning were that she wanted something timeless so she could keep the logo for a longer time. Especially within the nail industry there are a lot of logos with imagery of hands or polish bottles, but that was not our goal. I began with sending her some sketches and she picked out three variations that felt aligned with her vision. After finalizing the designs digitally we needed to find colors that represented her bubbly personality. Using all of these elements I also put together elements for social media, including a watermark for photos of her work and a layout for stories that she could use for last minute openings and other news for clients.

“A month or so ago I was seeking a graphic designer to help me with a brand identity package and Jenna reached out with interest. I sent her ideas of things I liked via email and then we met briefly on Zoom to discuss them more and get a feel for each other. I had a deadline of when I’d like it to be completed and she nailed it! We worked together every step of the way; taking out elements I didn’t like and replacing them with things I loved. Jenna is easy to work with, kind, funny and so dang talented! I have already referred to other people for their needs and I know they’ll be as happy as I am!”

A client reached out to me wanting to create a logo for her new personal training company. Her goals were to find a way to encompass a mind, body, and spirit focused personal growth. We both felt a lion would represent these qualities as they can symbolize a balance of power. In the way that a pride of lions work together to stay healthy and strong, working on your mind, body, and your mental health is her method to the best you.
During my time working at Loge Camps in Breckenridge I had the opportunity to design a lot of collateral for a few of the hotels locations. This included anything from menu design, camp activations, discount promotions, and small in-room print pieces. Each camp has its own style to follow as well as the overall brand guidelines of Loge.
This logo was done for Wheeler Law in the Denver Tech Center. This company was originally Wheeler Waters when the rebranding started and was almost complete. Though due to some changes within the company they needed to change their name to Wheeler Law. Luckily within the logo they went with, it was an easy change and adjustment to everything. We started with the logo, they knew the colors they wanted to use and that they wanted geometric shapes involved. With this information and having seen some of their competitions logos I created a few choices for them. The logo they went with is the initials of the company set within a square. This was to show rigid structure and stability which a law firm should represent. From there we decided on a typeface for the firm to use. I used this to create the email signatures and business cards for everyone in the firm. The company celebrated their rebrand by gifting each of their employees a logo embroidered vest. Felt great to help out a small and friendly local firm.
This freelance project was done for Wheat Ridge High School’s Studio 23. Done in collaboration with the studio and the Rockies Vans rep. This was the 11th year of this collaboration between Studio 23 and the Rockies Vans rep. That being said they wanted to change it up for the 11th year together. Typically the art students painted on vans shoes, this time they stepped it up and did a mural on the outside wall of a local pizza joint. My job was to create two logos for them to use. One for getting the word out about the mural completion celebration and the other to be used on painting aprons and in the mural itself. They also wanted to incorporate the phrase “On The Wall'“ to play off the Vans phrase of “Off The Wall” for the mural. The advertisement logo was made to be simple to not take away from the sneak peak image of the mural in the background. The other was done to look like a classic checkerboard pizza box and also pay homage to the classic Vans checkerboard shoes. Such an enjoyable and playful design to create and work on. Go check out the mural at Right Coast Pizza in Wheat Ridge, CO!
We were tasked with redesigning the 2016 TypeCon, this includes the logo, main webpage, program, and way-finding system. My goal was to highlight this years theme of “Resound” in a way that helps to exemplify that word and also still focus on the typography. I tried playing around with the needle in Seattle, where the convention is held, though none of those ideas felt like it represented the convention properly. I wanted the colors to be fun and bright so that the convention seemed exciting for the people attending. The logo idea I developed is playful and represents hand lettering while still being modern.
This company was in dire need of a rebrand, and with my experience of working there for a few years I had good insight into what was needed. This company had several logos in use to encompass their focuses in surf, skate, and snow. That being said, this needed to be exemplified in the final logo and system. The final logo and system do just that through use of simple iconography and colors that evoke the feel of surf, skate, and snow all together.
This project was done in collaboration with Daniel Ralph at Hifive Sticker & Design Co, during my internship there. Many of the early renditions of the logo were done by him, and I took over the last half of the project. We began with some rough ideas, Shelly was not sure if she wanted more of a monogram style or a pictorial style. The earliest logo ideas were more focused on a pictorial style, because Shelly had wanted to have the moon and also some mountains within her logo. We did decide that these didn’t quite represent her and her music well enough though. In the end we did go with a monogram style, that was simple and clean and represented Shelly well. Later on we began putting the logo on merchandise where we put to use a picture of the moon that she had wanted to incorporate originally. The merchanise expanded to stickers, shirts, an EP, and the campaign that she wanted to start.
As a designer who is heavily influenced by the culture of snowboarding I have always wondered how much this lifestyle sport impacts my design aesthetic. There is history mutually shared between both snowboarding and the field of design and this is the focal point of my thesis exploration. How have the respective histories of snowboarding and design influenced one another and how may they continue to influence the future of this integrated subculture? By revealing the correlation between design and snowboarding throughout history, we see the direct impact upon designers that have been influenced by this culture. Designers such as David Carson and Aaron Draplin represent various cross sections of the design aesthetic, that have come out of the influences of board sports. By showing a historical timeline that continues today, the impact is revealed through graphics, typography, and important moments of each decade that both design and the snowboard culture have shared.
The spirit that inspired it all was Bear Creek Distillery’s Rye Whiskey. This is one of my very favorite spirits that I have come to love in the short time I’ve been working there. We had also recently came out with an age your own whiskey kit that came with White Whiskey. This sparked an idea in my head of creating something that would showcase more of our spirits down the line, but chose to start off with just one spirit. Knowing I wanted to come up with a creative package that people would want to keep I thought what could possibly be better than a barrel?
This project was inspired after listening to one of my very favorite artists. The focus of this poster from the beginning was the typography. We had to create something dynamic with the type before we could add anything else. Using this method to create a poster design really helped in learning how typography should be treated with as much thought as anything else within design. Within the type I tried to represent the angular feel of Red Rocks before I included any of the graphics. My goal was to show all of the information and make sure the poster had a strong hierarchy. I was limited to three different sizes for the type. This created an interesting challenge that I later could change a little by use of color, which was inspired by Red Rocks and sound waves.
