As a designer who is heavily influenced by the culture of snowboarding I have always wondered how much this lifestyle sport impacts my design aesthetic. There is history mutually shared between both snowboarding and the field of design and this is the focal point of my thesis exploration. How have the respective histories of snowboarding and design influenced one another and how may they continue to influence the future of this integrated subculture? By revealing the correlation between design and snowboarding throughout history, we see the direct impact upon designers that have been influenced by this culture. Designers such as David Carson and Aaron Draplin represent various cross sections of the design aesthetic, that have come out of the influences of board sports. By showing a historical timeline that continues today, the impact is revealed through graphics, typography, and important moments of each decade that both design and the snowboard culture have shared.
